Saint Patrick's the patron saint of Ireland there are many legends about this saint:
One of the best known legend of this character is that he sent the snakes of Ireland to the sea and they drowned. This is the reason why there aren't snakes in Ireland.
Another legend says that he used the tree leaf-shamrock to explain the Trinity that's why the shamrock is the symbol of Ireland.
Nowadays in Ireland they celebrate Saint Patrick on March 17th because that day was the death of Saint Patrick, and his recognition as the patron saint of Ireland, that led to the celebration of March 17th as Saint Patrick's Day. In Ireland, St. Patrick's Day is a holy, religious time with praying, singing and dance. Outside Ireland, St. Patrick's Day is primarily a secular celebration of all things Irish.
