It's a Christian celebration, it consists of eating all the fat food in your house before Lent starts. On this celebration people in the U.K, England, New Zealand,..... make pancakes  not to waste eggs, flour and butter. They always make pancakes races and they wear aprons. After this celebration they start Lent. Lent is a period of time(40 days) when people stop eating their favorite food. That's why people have Shrove Tuesday.
Shrove Tuesday is also called Mardi Gras in the U.S.A.
This year Shrove Tuesday it's on the 21 st. of February.
